Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and Pro Chancellor of Kwara State University, Malete, died on Saturday at the age of 69 and was buried at his Oloje Housing Estate residence in Ilorin.

His death was confirmed by his son, Ibrahim Ambali, who spoke to journalists in Ilorin. A younger brother of the deceased, Alhaji Isiaka Bobonkiri, disclosed that Prof. Ambali had been in good health on Friday, accompanying him on a condolence visit to the Makama of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Oniye, before his sudden passing.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said he received the news with shock and sadness, describing the late academic as a towering figure whose impact extended well beyond the University system.

"Beyond being a towering academic figure, Prof. Ambali was a great humanist, a leader with profound impact on the community, and an outstanding administrator," the governor stated.

AbdulRazaq, in a statement signed by Deputy Chief Press Secretary AbdulRauf Agboola, extended condolences to KWASU, the University of Ilorin, and the family of the deceased, praying for divine mercy on the departed scholar.

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, also expressed deep sadness over the loss. Through his Spokesman Dr Abdulazeez Arowona, the emir described Ambali as an erudite scholar, accomplished administrator, and pride of the Ilorin Emirate whose contributions to education and national development were immense and enduring.

The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union said the death was a terrible blow that diminished the entire emirate, describing Ambali as a complete patriot and perfect gentleman who served his community with humility and dedication.

University of Ilorin Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN) called the death a huge loss to both Institutions and the nation, urging members of the UNILORIN community to attend the Janazah held at the Oloje Housing Estate residence.

Kwara State University, Malete, also announced his passing in a statement signed by the Acting Director of University relations, Prof. Saeedat Aliyu.
