The National Universities Commission has approved Kaduna State University to commence academic activities at its Distance Learning Institute, with the programme set to run initially under the Master of Business Administration, the Commission disclosed in a letter dated 15th July, 2026.

Kaduna State University confirmed that the approval follows the successful validation of the proposed Institute by an NUC panel that visited the University from 14th to 16th April, 2026. The Institute is expected to begin operations exclusively with the MBA programme, delivered through the ICT Enabled Supported Blended Learning mode under the Open and Distance Learning system.

The Commission noted that the approval marks a significant milestone in the University's efforts to expand access to quality higher education through technology enabled learning. It directed the Institution to ensure full compliance with all guidelines governing distance learning programmes in Nigerian Universities and to implement the recommendations contained in the panel's Technical Report.

Kaduna State University joins a limited group of Nigerian universities cleared to operate distance learning on a dual mode basis, meaning they retain their conventional face to face system alongside the newly approved ODL arm. The Commission has consistently maintained that only a small number of Nigerian universities possess the technical capacity to run a genuine online learning platform, distinguishing this from correspondence style or purely broadcast based distance education. The National Open University of Nigeria remains the only Institution in the country operating on a full ODL basis across its network of study centres nationwide.

A Post Validation Assessment Exercise will be carried out after one year of operation, the Commission revealed, describing the exercise as part of its quality assurance process for distance learning delivery. It further clarified that the introduction of any additional programmes at the Institute will be subject to programme by programme assessment and approval by the Commission before implementation.

The Institute's launch positions Kaduna State University among a growing number of Nigerian Universities expanding their reach through Open and Distance Learning platforms, as the Commission continues to tighten oversight of blended and online academic delivery across the country's higher education sector, particularly regarding curriculum development and instructional capacity for programmes delivered outside the traditional classroom setting.
