Students enrolled in the Radiography and Medical Laboratory Science programmes at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) could soon have greater assurance about the professional standing of their qualifications, following an internal mock accreditation exercise held on Tuesday, 31 March, designed to test the college's readiness ahead of formal assessments by regulatory bodies.
The Radiography programme faces accreditation by the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria from 6 to 8 April, while the Medical Laboratory Science programme is scheduled for its own accreditation exercise later in the month. The mock exercise was organised to identify gaps and make necessary corrections before external assessors arrive.
Provost Professor Olufemi Idowu said the college approached the mock assessment with the seriousness of the real thing. "We have a game plan towards ensuring success, and we appreciate a truthful assessment before the main exercise," he said, describing the internal appraisal as an opportunity for honest evaluation rather than a rehearsal of appearances.
The mock accreditation committee was led by the University's Director of Academic Planning, Dr Olanrewaju John, who said the team had maintained continuous engagement with relevant departments in preparation for the exercise. The committee reviewed academic and administrative documents and conducted inspections of offices and facilities within the college. The process was supported by the Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Professor Oluwaleke Sokunbi, and Faculty Officer Mr Adekoya.
For students currently studying Radiography and Medical Laboratory Science at LASUCOM, accreditation by the relevant professional regulatory bodies is not a procedural formality. It determines whether their degrees will be recognised for professional practice and employment in their chosen fields after graduation. A successful outcome in April secures that recognition and protects the value of the qualification they are working towards.
