The National Association of Nigerian Students has demanded an independent investigation into alleged administrative and academic dysfunction at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, issuing a seven day ultimatum to relevant authorities to act or face sustained student protests at the institution.
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, made the demand in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, alleging that the polytechnic had suffered years of systemic decay characterised by poor teaching quality, persistent charges for handouts and administrative receipts, inadequate academic supervision and a failure to mobilise graduates for the National Youth Service Corps since 2024.
"When an administration reduces an institution to a mere revenue collection centre while starving students of knowledge and staff of motivation, it triggers an unimaginable crisis with a multiplier effect that devalues the overall quality of tertiary education across the nation," the association stated.
NANS further alleged that students were compelled to use personal mobile phones during recent Computer Based Test examinations due to insufficient ICT infrastructure, resulting in widespread technical glitches, overcrowding, and reports of students collapsing from exhaustion.
The association called on the National Board for Technical Education, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, TETFund, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, and the Department of State Services to commence an independent investigation into the allegations. It also urged TETFund to audit intervention funds allocated to the institution, particularly those designated for ICT infrastructure.
Afeez said unresolved administrative issues and delays in uploading student records had left affected graduates unable to proceed with NYSC mobilisation, and urged relevant authorities to address the matter urgently.
"Let it be known to the public and the authorities concerned that NANS is not here to witch hunt any individual, nor are we driven by a personal vendetta against anyone. We are driven strictly by a profound commitment to a sound pedagogical system, the uncompromised welfare of our students, and the preservation of a healthy academic environment," he said.
NANS warned that if no concrete action was taken within seven days, its national leadership would relocate to the institution to stage peaceful protests and shut down administrative activities.
"Our call is strictly for the purpose of saving the school, restoring its lost glory, and correcting what urgently needs to be corrected," Afeez stated.
The association also cautioned OSPOLY management against victimising students or whistleblowers, warning that any intimidation would trigger a nationwide mobilisation.
