This is a notable jump from previous cycles, where qualified students received ₦20,000, while those studying professional courses like engineering, medicine, law, agriculture, and education received ₦30,000. With the new ₦50,000 flat rate, the state appears to have simplified and boosted the award across the board.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the 2026 bursary, applicants generally need to meet the following requirements:

• State Origin: Must be a genuine indigene of Akwa Ibom State, verifiable through a Certificate of Origin.

• Institution Type: Must be enrolled full time in a public federal or state tertiary institution (university, polytechnic, or college of education) in Nigeria. Private university students are currently not included in the programme.

• Academic Standing: Applicants must have completed their first year and currently be in their 2nd year (200 level) or above in most cycles; first year/100 level students typically aren't eligible yet.

• Identity Verification: Must possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN) that matches school records.

• No Double Dipping: Applicants must not be beneficiaries of any other government sponsored scholarship or bursary programme.

• Genuine Need: Applicants should be able to demonstrate genuine financial need and maintain active student status.

• Disability Grant (separate track): Students with disabilities must already be registered with the Ministry of Education to qualify for the special intervention grant, and this track is open to both public and private institution students, including postgraduates.

Application Process

The entire process happens online through the official portal; no physical submissions are required. Here's the detailed procedure:

• Visit the Official Portal: Go to the Akwa Ibom State Student Bursary and Support Grant Portal and choose the track that applies to you: the general State Bursary or the AKSG Intervention Grant for students with disabilities.

• Create a student profile using a valid email address, phone number, and your university matriculation/registration number.

• Complete Identity Verification: Enter your NIN. The system will verify this against your official school records, so make sure the details match exactly.

• Upload Required Documents: You'll need clear digital scans/photos of:

  • Certificate of Origin

  • Admission Letter

  • Student ID Card

  • School Fee Receipt (ideally one with an RRR number if paid via Remita, since these can be independently validated)

  • A recent passport photograph

  • Local Government letter (some applicants have had their applications flagged for omitting this, so don't skip it)

• Provide Bank Account Details: Add a valid bank account in your own name; this is where your bursary payment will be sent directly if approved.

• State Parental/Financial Information: Some cycles require you to declare your parents' occupation or means of livelihood as part of assessing financial need.

• Submit and Await Review: Once submitted, your application goes through a verification process with the Ministry of Education / State Scholarships Board. If approved, funds are disbursed directly to your registered bank account.
