MECI Scholarship 2026: For Medicine and Surgery Students

If you're a medicine and surgery student in Nigeria looking for financial support to help you through medical school, the Medical Student Empowerment For Community Initiative (MECI) Scholarship 2026 is now open for applications.

This scholarship is designed specifically for undergraduate medical students who show strong academic promise, community leadership, and genuine financial need, and it comes with both cash support and mentorship.

What is the MECI Scholarship?

The MECI Scholarship is a financial empowerment initiative run by the Medical Students' Empowerment for Community Initiative, aimed at easing the financial burden on medicine and surgery students at select Nigerian universities.

Rather than being open to all fields of study, MECI is laser-focused on future doctors, recognising both the high cost of medical training and the importance of nurturing socially conscious healthcare leaders.

Beyond the direct financial award, the programme also builds in a mentorship component, giving selected students guidance as they continue through their medical education.

Scholarship Benefits

Students selected for the MECI Scholarship will receive the following:

  • A single cash award of ₦100,000

  • Financial assistance specifically earmarked to support medical education costs

  • Mentorship support throughout medical school

Who is Eligible?

The MECI Scholarship isn't open to every student in Nigeria; it's restricted to medicine and surgery students currently enrolled at one of six participating institutions. To qualify, you must:

  • Be a registered Medicine and Surgery student

  • Be enrolled at one of the six participating medical schools (listed below)

  • Be studying at any level of the Medicine and Surgery programme (this isn't limited to first years or final years; students across all levels can apply)

  • Be able to demonstrate financial need

  • Maintain good academic standing

Participating Institutions

Only students at the following six Nigerian universities are eligible to apply:

  • University of Benin

  • University of Ilorin

  • University of Maiduguri

  • Nnamdi Azikiwe University

  • Obafemi Awolowo University

  • Usmanu Danfodiyo University

If you're studying medicine and surgery at any other institution, unfortunately you won't qualify for this particular round of MECI funding, but it's worth watching for future cycles or similar community health focused scholarships.

Required Documents

Before you start your application, make sure you have the following ready:

  • A completed online application form

  • Accurate personal information (full name, contact details, etc.)

  • Academic information (transcripts, current level of study, academic standing)

  • Institutional details confirming your enrollment at one of the participating universities

Having these documents prepared in advance will help you move through the application quickly and avoid last-minute errors.

How to Apply for the MECI Scholarship 2026

The application process is straightforward and fully online. Here's how to go about it:

  • Confirm your eligibility: Verify that you're enrolled in medicine and surgery at one of the six listed universities and that you meet the financial need and academic standing requirements.

  • Gather your documents: Have your academic records, institutional confirmation, and personal details ready before you begin.

  • Access the official application form: The scholarship is administered through an official online form (linked below).

  • Fill out all required sections carefully: Provide accurate and complete information; incomplete applications may not be considered.

  • Submit before the deadline: Applications must be submitted no later than July 31, 2026.

For medicine and surgery students at the University of Benin, University of Ilorin, University of Maiduguri, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, the MECI Scholarship offers a meaningful way to offset the cost of medical training while gaining access to mentorship along the way.
