Medical students at the University of Lagos College of Medicine, Idi Araba, are set to gain 170 new bed spaces following the formal handover of a hostel construction site to Colton Construction Limited on Wednesday, 1 April 2026, marking the official start of a project funded under TETFund's Special High Impact Projects initiative.

The ceremony was attended by UNILAG Vice Chancellor Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, who described the development as a strategic investment in Nigeria's medical training capacity at a time when the country is losing trained healthcare professionals to emigration at an accelerating rate. She said the new hostel would support the University's ambition to produce up to 1,000 medical doctors annually, a target that requires not only academic infrastructure but adequate residential facilities for students undergoing the intensive training that medical education demands.

Ogunsola acknowledged TETFund's role in making the project possible and commended the management of the College of Medicine for advancing the initiative. Provost Professor Ademola Oremosu added that the hostel forms part of a broader infrastructure drive to strengthen the training environment for medical professionals at the institution.

Director of Colton Construction Limited, Dr Anthony Ajulo, thanked the university for the confidence placed in his company and committed to delivering the project within the approved 24 month timeline and to the required specifications. The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of project documents, officially transferring the site to the contractor.

For medical students currently navigating the chronic accommodation shortage that affects many Nigerian Teaching Hospital campuses, the new hostel addresses a practical barrier that has long complicated the already demanding experience of studying medicine in Lagos. Students enrolled at the College of Medicine who must balance clinical rotations, long study hours, and limited housing options near Idi Araba stand to benefit most directly when the facility is completed.
