The Management Of The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has dismissed circulating social media claims of an impending terrorist attack and mass abduction on its campus as false and unverified, while simultaneously announcing a series of security measures, including an immediate ban on motorcycle operations within the Institution.
Acting Public Relations Officer Inya Agha Egwu, in a statement issued on Sunday, said security assessments conducted by relevant authorities had uncovered no credible intelligence to support the alarming claims spreading online.
"The University wishes to state that there is no credible security intelligence or verified threat to the University of Nigeria that supports the claims contained in the post. The information being circulated is therefore unsubstantiated and should not be regarded as factual," the statement read.
Despite the absence of a confirmed threat, the University said it had introduced additional precautionary measures as a matter of priority. Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army have been deployed to key entry points across the Nsukka campus to complement the efforts of the University Security Unit, while some access gates will be temporarily closed to improve surveillance and regulate movement.
The motorcycle ban represents one of the Institution's most significant security directives in recent times. Management stated that no motorcycle would be permitted beyond the University gates except those belonging to authorised security personnel, and advised staff who commute by motorcycle to park outside the campus before proceeding to their offices.
The University urged students, parents, guardians, and the general public to refrain from spreading unverified information capable of generating panic and disrupting academic activities. It cautioned against relying on anonymous social media accounts and sensational online messages, noting that such reports create avoidable anxiety within educational communities.
Management reassured stakeholders of its commitment to maintaining a secure environment and encouraged students and staff to report any suspicious movements or activities to the Institution's security unit or relevant law enforcement agencies.
