Bayero University Kano has expelled 171 students after a senate committee investigation found they had falsified their admission entry qualifications, in one of the most significant disciplinary actions taken by a Nigerian University in recent memory.

The decision was approved at the university's 433rd Senate meeting held on 4 March 2026, following findings by the Senate Committee on Entry Qualification Irregularities. The affected students were drawn from different departments and academic levels across the Institution.

The University confirmed that the expulsions were carried out in accordance with Section 20.7, Category A (vii) of its General Examinations and Academic Regulations, which prescribes expulsion as the penalty for credential falsification. "The Senate of Bayero University, Kano, at its 433rd meeting held on March 4, 2026, has approved the expulsion of 171 students for falsifying their admission entry qualifications," the University stated in its weekly bulletin.

In a separate but related disciplinary action, the Senate also approved the expulsion of Yusuf Muhammad Sani, a Civil Engineering student, for physically assaulting invigilators during an examination, an incident the University said disrupted the conduct of the paper and breached its regulations on student conduct.

BUK management used the occasion to issue a warning to current and prospective students. "This mass expulsion serves as a stern warning to current and prospective students of the Institution that BUK maintains a zero tolerance policy toward both academic fraud and indiscipline," the University stated.

For prospective University students across Nigeria, the scale of BUK's action is a reminder that credential falsification, however common it may appear at the point of admission, carries consequences that can end an academic career years after the initial fraud.
