In a major boost for digital literacy in Nigeria, the Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation (AAAF), in collaboration with the World Bank, has successfully conducted an intensive training program for students at State Senior Secondary School, Agege. The high impact session focused on equipping the next generation with essential skills in computer literacy, machine learning, and the practical application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This strategic intervention is a core component of the foundation’s ongoing community connections campaign across the federation. The primary objective remains the empowerment of Nigerian students through practical technological expertise, designed to enhance their academic performance while positioning them for high value employment and long term self sufficiency in an increasingly digital global economy.

To ensure the sustainability of the program, student representatives were handpicked from various classes to participate. The initiative operates on a "train the trainer" model, with the expectation that these selected beneficiaries will return to their classrooms and effectively transfer the newly acquired technical knowledge to their peers.

Highlighting the urgency of the project, the Executive Coordinator of the AAAF, Foluke Ademokun, emphasised that the initiative is a direct response to the pressing challenges of youth unemployment. By closing the existing skills gap, the foundation aims to provide youth with the tools necessary to navigate the modern labour market.

Speaking on behalf of the school’s management, Vice Principal Sherifat Ajala lauded the foundation for its professional facilitation. She expressed deep appreciation for the rare opportunity granted to the students to engage directly with industry leading minds throughout the duration of the training.

The session also recognised individual excellence, as students Goodluck Innocent and Moses Faith were rewarded for their outstanding engagement and participation. Both students expressed their gratitude to the AAAF, noting that these skills significantly brighten their future career prospects and pledging to utilise the lessons learned to their full potential.

In a move to ensure the school maintains its digital momentum, the foundation capped the event by donating essential tech hardware, including a new laptop, a projector, and a high quality projector screen to the institution’s facilities.

This Agege training is part of a wider, successful rollout that has already reached several other institutions, including Community Grammar School in Zion Pepe, Ondo State, as well as Osolu Senior Secondary School in Badagry and Pobuna Senior Grammar School in Epe.

Other beneficiaries in the latest phase include Baptist Model College in Ile Epo, Ijaiye Ojokoro Senior High School in Ifako Ijaiye, and Unity Senior College in Alimosho. This expansive effort has now brought the total number of students empowered through the foundation’s tech initiative to nearly 600 across Lagos and beyond
