Financial pressure on students and the suspension of paramilitary groups have emerged as the central concerns of the Students' Union Government of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, following a courtesy visit by union executives to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige.
The visit, which formed part of ongoing efforts to sustain dialogue with management, saw the union leadership revisit issues raised during its inauguration, with emphasis on the need for swift action on matters affecting student welfare and campus engagement.
Prominent among the concerns raised was the delay in disbursing the Federal Government's NELFUND student loans, which the union noted had continued to place financial strain on many students. The union equally demanded the reinstatement of suspended paramilitary groups within the institution, including the Cadet Corps and Man O' War, stressing their importance in fostering discipline and extracurricular engagement among students.
In a statement jointly signed by the Students' Union President, Folagbade Ayoola, General Secretary, Amos Oluwatimileyin, and Public Relations Officer, Omomowo Ayomi, the union affirmed that the Vice Chancellor was reminded of the urgency of the issues during the engagement.
The statement further noted that the visit served as an avenue to strengthen the union's commitment to constructive collaboration with the university management. "The engagement also served as an avenue to reaffirm the union's commitment to constructive dialogue and collaboration in achieving meaningful improvements for students," the statement read.
The union assured students of continued follow up on all outstanding matters. "The Students' Union Government assures AAUAITES that it will continue to follow up on these matters and provide updates as progress is made," it stated.
