Redeemer's University Management paid a surprise visit to Professor Christian Happi at the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH) in recognition of his birthday and his contributions to science and global public health, the university has announced.
The visit, held at the IGH facility formerly known as ACEGID, brought together university leadership and members of the academic community in appreciation of a scholar whose research has shaped global responses to infectious diseases and emerging health threats across Africa.
Prof. Happi, Founder and Director of the Institute of Genomics and Global Health, is recognised for pioneering work in genomics, infectious disease surveillance and epidemic preparedness. His influence on pandemic resilience across the continent has placed him among Africa's most prominent voices in biomedical research and public health innovation.
His standing was further cemented when TIME Magazine named him among its 100 Most Influential People, a distinction acknowledging his leadership in advancing scientific knowledge and addressing critical global health challenges.
During the visit, the Redeemer's University delegation described Prof. Happi as a visionary scholar whose research outputs and leadership continue to inspire a new generation of scientists in Africa's genomics and biotechnology space. The university praised his role in building institutional capacity for disease detection and response, noting that his work has strengthened Nigeria's and Africa's preparedness against infectious disease outbreaks.
Members of the Academic Community who attended highlighted his humility, mentorship and commitment to scientific excellence, with the University stating that the gesture reflects its recognition of staff and affiliates whose work brings global honour to the institution.
The University also commended Prof. Happi's efforts in bridging the gap between African led scientific research and global health innovation through collaborative research initiatives and training programmes.
The occasion served as both a birthday celebration and a reaffirmation of Redeemer's University's commitment to research excellence, innovation and scientific leadership. The University community described him as a beacon of African excellence whose work continues to generate progress and global recognition in genomics and infectious disease research.
