The Enugu International Conference Centre became the epicentre of a major educational milestone last Friday, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio joined Senator Osita Ngwu to celebrate the 2025/2026 Scholarship and Bursary Awards for students of the Enugu West Senatorial Zone.
The event, marked by high energy and significant political backing, spotlighted an initiative that is rapidly becoming a benchmark for legislative impact. Senator Ngwu, the driving force behind the program, announced that 4,000 students are currently benefiting from the N250 million scheme.
Recognising the gravity of the investment, Senate President Akpabio, who attended alongside Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, offered a massive show of support. Moved by the scale of the operation, Akpabio announced a personal donation of N100 million to bolster the project.
“Senator Osita Ngwu is laying a foundation for the leaders of tomorrow,” Akpabio declared, praising the senator for his commitment to youth development. He noted that the initiative was so compelling that it forced him to alter his own schedule, instructing his pilot to stand down so he could witness the proceedings.
Akpabio further challenged his colleagues and wealthy Nigerians to follow suit, noting that he has championed similar causes since 1988. He described the Enugu West model as an "uncommon project" that represents a vital investment in the future of both the state and the nation.
Senator Ngwu shared the humble origins of the initiative, which began nearly three decades ago. As an Engineering student at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, he spent his spare time providing free coaching to students in his hometown of Ngwo to help them prepare for their examinations.
That grassroots effort has evolved into the Enugu West Academy (EWA). Today, the academy operates across 19 physical centres and digital platforms, supported by a workforce of 175 teachers, providing mentorship and technology enabled learning to thousands of students.
The impact is already showing in the numbers. Ngwu reported that in 2025, the academy facilitated free UTME preparation for over 2,600 students. Notably, 65 per cent of those participants scored above 200, with more than 30 students achieving scores exceeding 300.
Ngwu credited the success of the expansion to the collaboration with the Enugu State government. He expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah for authorising the use of public facilities to house the academy’s learning centres, a move he described as a crucial catalyst for the program's growth.
Kanayochukwu Ani, the academy’s director of strategy, reinforced the sentiment, stating that the project has become a vital, community driven pillar for families across the senatorial district.
The ceremony featured several high impact moments, including the presentation of a N5.5 million cheque to cover the fees of three postgraduate students. Additional awards were distributed to students based on merit and performance, ensuring a wide range of beneficiaries.
Representing Governor Mbah, Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai lauded the initiative, highlighting the difficulty of funding such massive programs without executive budgetary control. He underscored the government's own dedication to education, citing the state’s massive investment in the "eco school" system.
The gathering drew a distinguished crowd, including members of the National Assembly such as Kelvin Chukwu, Onyeka Nwebonyi, and Anayo Onwuegbu. Also in attendance were traditional rulers, local political leaders, and the newly elected APC State Chairman, Martin Chukwunwike.
As the event concluded, the consensus remained clear: the Enugu West Academy is setting a powerful precedent for how legislative influence can be directly translated into human capital development, offering a blueprint for educational empowerment across Nigeria.
