Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) has scheduled its 48th Inaugural Lecture for Tuesday, 28th July 2026, with Professor Ahmad AbdulHameed of the Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science, set to deliver the address. The lecture, titled The Earth On Overdose: The Anthropocene And The Call For Ecological Restoration, will be held at 4:00 pm at the 1000 Seat Capacity Lecture Theatre on the Yelwa Campus.

Prof. Ibrahim H. Garba, Vice Chancellor of the University, will chair the event. Management extended an invitation to members of the University community, the academic circle, and the general public, and urged attendees to arrive early to secure seating before the presentation begins.

Prof. AbdulHameed's research background spans environmental science, ecotoxicology, plant soil interaction, and biodiversity. His published work has examined contamination levels and associated health risks linked to heavy metals in food crops grown in northern Nigeria, alongside broader investigations into pollution arising from industrial and agricultural sources.

The 48th lecture continues a series that has featured prominently in the University's academic calendar in recent years. The 47th Inaugural Lecture, delivered on the theme of waste and the circular economy, marked part of an effort described by University figures as a resuscitation of a lecture series that had previously stalled for a stretch of years, with a commitment that every professor in the University's service would eventually deliver theirs.

ATBU traces its origins to 1980, when it was established as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi, before being renamed in honour of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first Prime Minister. The Institution briefly merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1984 before regaining its autonomous status in 1988 under its current name. It now operates as a Federal University of technology with an established Faculty of Science.

Attendees are reminded that seating begins ahead of the 4:00 pm start time, with early arrival encouraged, given the scale of the venue.
