The Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri has charged 6,553 newly admitted students to prioritise discipline and integrity over academic performance, emphasising that their character will ultimately define their success in life more than examination scores.
Mohammed Laminu Mele made the charge on Tuesday during the 44th Matriculation Ceremony held at the Convocation Square, where students, parents and guests gathered to witness the formal admission of the new intake.
Prof. Mele told the Matriculants that despite the difficulties the University has faced, including insurgency and resource constraints, the Institution has remained strong and committed to academic excellence.
"Discipline is the foundation of success. There will be many temptations and shortcuts along the way, but remember that true academic success must be earned. Your character will define you even more than your academic results," he stated.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that students were admitted into 100 and 200 level degree programmes through UTME, Direct Entry and placements from the University's remedial arts and science programmes, with the Faculty of Life Sciences recording the highest intake of 1,189 students in the University's history. Life Sciences, Education, Physical Sciences and Engineering attracted the largest numbers.
Prof. Mele urged students to embrace discipline, hard work and morality throughout their academic journey. "I strongly advise you to avoid examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, misuse of social media and violence. The University will not tolerate acts that threaten peace and discipline on campus," he warned.
He stated that students found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary measures, including expulsion and prosecution.
The Vice Chancellor stressed the importance of dedication and personal effort in achieving academic success. "In your classrooms, laboratories, studios and workshops, you must commit fully to your studies. Success depends on your hard work. Honesty, integrity and respect would define students more than academic results," he said.
Prof. Mele thanked parents and guardians for entrusting their children to the University, assuring them of a conducive environment for learning and development.
The Registrar, Ahmad Alhaji Lawan, who administered the Matriculation oath to the students, reaffirmed the University's commitment to providing a conducive learning environment and robust support services. He congratulated the new students and wished them success in their academic pursuits.
With over 6,500 fresh students now on campus, the University of Maiduguri continues to demonstrate resilience in delivering quality education despite operating in one of Nigeria's most challenging security environments, sending a strong message that academic pursuit and character development remain possible even in the face of adversity.
