Corps members of the 2026 Batch A Stream II, currently participating in orientation at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp in Iseyin, Oyo State, have expressed concerns regarding inconsistent power supply and water shortages. These issues have adversely impacted hygiene and overall welfare, with participants reporting progressively challenging living conditions since their arrival last Wednesday.
Speaking with our correspondent on Tuesday on condition of anonymity, corps members said the situation had made it difficult to maintain basic hygiene, particularly among female participants.
"The situation has not been nice at all. We've been experiencing an erratic power supply since we came last Wednesday, and there has been a challenge with the water supply. Sometimes, we attend programmes without taking a bath because we may be alerted to programmes while still waiting for water, and we have no choice but to join the programmes. It is becoming a challenge to maintain proper hygiene, especially among female corps members," one corps member stated.
Another corps member alleged that NYSC officials in Oyo State had warned participants against airing grievances on social media, a development she said had discouraged many from speaking out openly.
"We were warned against posting anything that can incriminate the scheme in the state. I think that's why many people may not talk about the issue. We hope that the NYSC management in Oyo will look into the situation before it deteriorates further," she added.
Oyo State NYSC Coordinator Kayode Peters disputed the claims of water scarcity when contacted, acknowledging the power challenges but insisting that adequate water provision had been maintained throughout.
"That there's no water, that is not correct. We pump water every time for them. Because of the epileptic power supply in Nigeria, we have to use our generator to pump water morning, afternoon, and night for their comfort," Peters disclosed.
Welfare complaints at NYSC orientation camps have become a recurring pattern in recent years, covering electricity, water and accommodation conditions. Separately, the Niger State Government recently ordered the immediate repair of buildings damaged by a windstorm at the NYSC orientation camp in Paiko, following severe weather disruptions that recorded no casualties.
