A 500 level student at Covenant University has died following a medical emergency that occurred during a football training session on campus on 6 April 2026, prompting grief within the University community and a wave of public criticism on social media over the circumstances of his death.
Jesutunmise Emmanuel, a Building Technology student, stepped out of a training session after complaining of leg pains and fatigue. Shortly after, his teammates noticed he was gasping for breath and rushed him to the University's medical centre, which was located directly opposite the playing field. According to the University's management, Emmanuel had stopped breathing by the time he arrived at the facility.
Vice Chancellor Timothy Anake, in an official statement, said medical personnel immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used an automated external defibrillator in an attempt to revive him, but that all efforts were unsuccessful. He was subsequently certified clinically dead due to what the university described as a prior undisclosed heart condition. "Though he was brought in dead, the doctors responded immediately," the statement read, adding that the University confirmed there was no negligence on the part of medical staff and no shortage of required equipment.
The University's account was disputed on social media, where several users on X alleged that the medical centre lacked oxygen and that management responded with prayers rather than medical intervention. The claims spread rapidly, with some users linking the incident to previous student deaths at the Institution. Covenant University dismissed these allegations, stating that the management, led by the Vice Chancellor, was present at the medical centre from the time of the incident until Emmanuel's parents arrived, and remained with the family until he was laid to rest.
The divergence between the official account and what circulated on social media has intensified scrutiny of emergency response standards at Nigerian University medical facilities more broadly, with observers noting that the speed and adequacy of on campus medical care can be the difference between life and death when a student collapses during physical activity.
The Covenant University community has extended condolences to Emmanuel's family. He was described in the university's statement as "a diligent and vibrant student."
