Eleven years after leaving Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State, global Afrobeats star David Adeleke, known as Davido, has returned to his alma mater with a pledge to donate a dedicated building and equip it with world class music facilities, describing creativity as the new economic frontier for Nigeria.
The singer made the commitment during a visit to the institution where he toured both the main and mini campuses, inspected the music department, and held discussions with university management on the proposed upgrade.
"I'm ready to donate and give back to the school and make sure we have proper standard studios and facilities because music is oil right now in Nigeria. Creativity right now is oil," Davido stated.
He added that the planned facility would mirror the standard of his personal Lagos studio. "I feel like it's a department that needs its own building and proper equipment, just like the personal studio I recently built in Lagos. It's going to be a high class music studio," he disclosed, noting that plans were expected to be finalised before the end of the year.
Reflecting on his undergraduate years, Davido credited Babcock with instilling discipline that shaped his career, recalling that he balanced an already flourishing entertainment career with academic commitments. "I could be in Miami on Wednesday, but I knew I had to return to class," he remarked. He also noted that his wife, Chioma Adeleke, was among those he met during his time at the institution.
Addressing students, the singer urged young people to remain focused regardless of their chosen field. "The most important thing is to believe in yourself and love what you do. Whether it's music, sports, journalism, engineering or law, push yourself to the fullest extent," he advised.
University President and Vice Chancellor, Professor Afolarin Olutunde Ojewole, revealed plans to establish a David Adeleke School of Music in the singer's honour, citing his foundational role in bringing the music department into existence.
"Even getting the charter of this institution after 40 years of waiting did not happen without the injection from Davido. The music department only became a reality because of him," Professor Ojewole disclosed.
He assured the singer of the university's pride in his global achievements. "We boast about you, we dance to your music, and we are proud that you always identify with Babcock and your heritage everywhere in the world," he stated.
