Nearly 10,000 students have been formally inducted into Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, as the institution administered the matriculation oath to 9,498 freshers during a ceremony held on Saturday in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Vice Chancellor Professor Samuel Asagba, who presided over the event, congratulated the new students on securing a place at the institution. "I congratulate you for not only attaining another milestone in your academic pursuit, but for successfully scaling through the difficult hurdles of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Post University Matriculation Screening exercise," he said.

It was the second matriculation ceremony Prof Asagba has presided over since taking office on 2 December 2024 as the university's eighth substantive vice chancellor. He noted that DELSU's reputation for maintaining a smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar had made it one of the most sought after institutions in Nigeria. The university currently runs 17 faculties, 109 academic programmes, one Institute of Education and a Business School, with management already working to introduce additional programmes.

Prof Asagba reminded the freshers that matriculation was more than a formality. "Today, as you subscribe to the rite of this landmark academic tradition, you will become formally admitted into DELSU," he said, urging students to embrace discipline and shun examination malpractice, indecent dressing and cultism. "Peace is paramount to meaningful academic pursuit, and it is on this premise that DELSU will continue to wage war against the nefarious activities of secret cults on campus," he warned, adding that any student caught engaging in cult related activities would be expelled.

He also thanked Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his contributions to the university's growth.
