Students in Enugu State are celebrating after becoming the second beneficiaries of a federal government initiative providing free Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board registration across the Southeast region.
The South East Renewed Hope Agenda launched the Enugu phase of the programme, distributing support to 10,000 students to receive ₦8,500 each, to cover their 2026 JAMB registration costs.
Belusochukwu Enwere, who coordinates SERHA at the national level, described the gesture as more than financial assistance during the launch ceremony in Enugu.
"This programme is not charity; it is strategic empowerment. When we educate our youth, we secure our economy. When we empower our students, we strengthen our nation," Enwere declared.
He positioned the intervention within the framework of President Bola Tinubu's broader education agenda, explaining that removing financial obstacles to examination registration aligns with the administration's commitment to youth development.
"The programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which, among other things, prioritises youth empowerment, education reform, and inclusive national development," Enwere stated.
The National Coordinator highlighted complementary federal initiatives, including ongoing efforts to maintain stable relations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the creation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, as evidence of a comprehensive strategy to expand access to higher education.
Addressing the beneficiaries directly, Enwere urged them to approach their examination preparation with seriousness and dedication, encouraging parents and guardians to maintain their support throughout their children's academic journey.
Enugu's allocation follows Tuesday's distribution ceremony in Ebonyi State, where another 10,000 students received identical support in Abakaliki.
The programme targets a total of 50,000 students across the Southeast's five states, with Abia, Anambra, and Imo expected to host their distribution events shortly. Each state receives an equal allocation of 10,000 registration slots, making this one of the largest coordinated education interventions in the region's recent history.
With JAMB's registration window closing on the 26th February 2026 and the examination body maintaining its position against any deadline extension, the timing of this support provides crucial relief for families facing economic pressure.
The initiative demonstrates how targeted government intervention can address immediate financial barriers whilst contributing to long term human capital development goals across the Southeast geopolitical zone.
