The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, Dr Muhammed Aminu Muhammed, has commended the Enugu State Government for the transformation of Government Technical College, Enugu, describing it as a model institution that now meets the standard Nigeria desires for technical and vocational education.
Muhammed made the commendation during a monitoring visit to the ongoing May/June National Business Certificate and National Technical Certificate examinations at the college, saying the facility stood out from all the technical colleges he had visited across the six geopolitical zones.
"From all the institutions I have visited across the North East, North West, North Central, South South, South West, and now the South East, Government Technical College, Enugu, has met the standard of the technical colleges we are supposed to have in Nigeria," he stated.
The NABTEB chief also praised the school's principal for maintaining the facilities in functional condition, noting that providing equipment and sustaining its use were two different responsibilities.
"I commend the principal for keeping this environment neat and ensuring that all the workshops are working. It is one thing to provide equipment, and it is another thing to ensure those facilities are working," he said.
Muhammed said the practical workshops in welding, tailoring, and fashion design demonstrated that graduates were leaving the institution with employable skills and the capacity to create jobs for others.
"Upon the graduation of any student from Government Technical College, Enugu, that candidate already has a job. He has a job for himself, and he also has the capacity to create jobs for others," he added.
The registrar, however, acknowledged that infrastructure deficit, obsolete equipment, and insufficient teacher development remained serious challenges confronting technical education across Nigeria, stressing that the sector must keep pace with global technological changes.
"There is no need for us to reinvent the wheel. We should borrow technology, acquire patents where necessary, and catch up with where the rest of the world is," he said.
Muhammed pledged to continue supporting and promoting Government Technical College, Enugu, through his office, describing its sustained development as a personal responsibility going forward.
