Kwara State University has confirmed receiving N2,135,857,150 from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund on behalf of 11,434 students, in what the Institution's Vice Chancellor has described as one of the most significant tuition support interventions in its history.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Jimoh Shaykh Luqman disclosed the figure on Tuesday during an interactive session with journalists at his office, confirming that the funds were received on 17 April and formally acknowledged in a letter to NELFund's Managing Director dated 21 April.
Shaykh Luqman described the disbursement as a major milestone in higher education financing, noting that financial constraints had long threatened the academic progress of many students at the institution.
"On behalf of the university, I sincerely thank the Federal Government and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund for the timely processing and disbursement of the funds in support of education," he stated.
The vice chancellor noted that the intervention would reduce financial pressure on beneficiaries and their families, strengthen access to tertiary education, and ensure that deserving students are not denied academic opportunities due to inability to pay.
He expressed confidence that the programme would improve academic stability among recipients and allow them to concentrate on their studies without the burden of tuition uncertainty.
KWASU's confirmation places the disbursement among the largest single tuition support releases recorded by the institution under the Federal Government's student loan initiative, which was introduced to expand access to higher education across Nigeria.
The NELFund scheme provides financial assistance to eligible students enrolled in tertiary institutions nationwide. Education stakeholders have consistently described it as a strategic intervention with the potential to increase enrolment figures, curb dropout rates, and broaden access to quality higher education.
Shaykh Luqman commended the Federal Government and NELFund for the efficiency of the disbursement process, reaffirming that KWASU would continue to support programmes aimed at expanding educational opportunities and improving student welfare across the Institution.
