A distinguished legal scholar with a decade of experience in academia and the justice sector has been named to lead the Federal University Dutse's newest academic unit, as Professor Aliyu Ibrahim takes charge as Pioneer Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law for an initial period of one year.
The appointment was announced in a statement signed by the University Registrar, Alhaji Abubakar Mijinyawa, and made available to journalists on Wednesday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital. The Faculty of Law was created during the tenure of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Professor Sabo Abdulkarim, who served until February this year, and has since undergone the required accreditation by the National Universities Commission.
The statement described Professor Ibrahim as "a distinguished legal scholar, educator, and practitioner with over a decade of experience in academia and the justice sector," noting that he previously served as a Lecturer and Dean of the Faculty of Law at Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina. He holds a PhD in Public Law from the University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban, South Africa, with a focus on human rights, international law, and governance.
According to the statement, Professor Ibrahim has taught a wide range of courses, including Public International Law, Constitutional Law, and Law of Evidence, and has supervised postgraduate research across institutions in Nigeria. He has numerous publications in reputable local and international journals and served as Editor in Chief of the UMYU Law Journal, in addition to holding editorial roles in other scholarly publications.
Mijinyawa further noted that the new Dean began his legal career in a private legal firm before moving to the Katsina State Judiciary as a legal assistant, later rising to become a magistrate before joining academia in 2012. He has also facilitated capacity building programmes and contributed significantly to university administration and community service, particularly in legal education and conflict resolution initiatives.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, congratulated Professor Ibrahim on his appointment, praying that Allah guides him in nurturing the new faculty to success. The university described the appointment as a testament to its commitment to academic excellence and its vision to become a leading institution in Nigeria.
