The Federal Government has started implementing key parts of its renewed agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities on staff welfare and working conditions.
The Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, announced that the government has approved and implemented a 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance for ASUU members, effective from January 1, 2026.
He said some federal universities have already reflected the increase in their salary payments.
According to the minister, measures are being taken to ensure that the adjustment is applied uniformly across all federal institutions. He said universities are being formally informed to include the new allowance structure in their payroll systems so that all eligible staff can benefit.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the minister directed Vice Chancellors to comply strictly with the approved framework for the Consolidated Tools Allowance.
The statement said Vice Chancellors were advised to manage available funds carefully to support the smooth implementation of the allowance.
The minister also explained that the payment has been approved and circulated by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. He added that its inclusion in the 2026 budget follows established statutory procedures.
University managements were urged to take timely steps to ensure prompt payment of the Consolidated Tools Allowance in line with official guidelines.
Dr Alausa said proper implementation of both allowances would improve staff motivation and strengthen academic activities across federal universities.
“The Federal Government reiterates its resolve to honour agreements entered into with stakeholders in the education sector and remains committed to constructive engagement, transparency, industrial harmony, and the continuous improvement of quality education in Nigeria,” the statement added.
