Two persons are in custody in Osogbo after students of Interlink College of Health Technology in Ijebu Jesa stormed a police divisional headquarters, broke a vehicle windscreen, and assaulted officers during a violent protest over the death of a colleague in a road accident.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the arrests on Thursday, linking them to a protest that erupted on Wednesday after a National Diploma II student of the institution, identified simply as Oluwaseun, died in an accident along the Ilesa Ijebu Jesa road. The deceased, from the Mass Communication Department, was reportedly returning to Ijebu Jesa from Ilesa on a motorcycle when a bus allegedly hit him.
Students reportedly converged on the accident scene, demanding that the bus driver be handed over to them. The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that some protesters soaked a loaf of bread in petrol, set it alight, and threw it under the bus involved in the accident before officers extinguished the fire and moved the vehicle to the station.
"Two Divisional Police Officers and the town monarch had appealed to them to remain calm," Ojelabi stated, adding that the situation worsened when a group of protesters marched to the Ijebu Jesa Divisional Headquarters.
"They broke a vehicle windscreen and assaulted our officers. We arrested two of them, and the investigation is ongoing. Those arrested have been transferred to the headquarters in Osogbo," he said.
Teargas was deployed to disperse protesters at the accident scene before the march to the station occurred. Eyewitness videos circulating online showed students confronting officers during the standoff.
The remains of the deceased student were laid to rest on Thursday in Iwoye Ijesa during funeral rites attended by family members, friends, and fellow students.
The incident has continued to generate reactions among students and residents, with many calling for improved road safety measures while investigations into the accident continue.
