The Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University Okada has credited the Institution's founder with the foresight and courage that gave Nigeria its first private university, speaking at a ceremony that drew senior stakeholders and a keynote address on sustaining academic institutions in challenging times.

Professor Lawrence Ezemonye delivered the tribute at the University's 27th Founders Day ceremony on Saturday, where Dr Sam Ikoku presented a lecture themed "Keeping the University Dream in a Fragile Ecosystem." Chief Lucky Igbinedion and Dr Ikoku, chairman and chief executive officer of Sam Ikoku Group, were among those present at the event.

Ezemonye stated that the founder's initiative had transformed the institution into one of Nigeria's most respected private universities, built on values of knowledge, leadership and excellence.

"Founders Day offers us an opportunity not only to celebrate our achievements but also to reflect on the vision, sacrifices and determination that laid the foundation of this great Institution," he said.

The Vice Chancellor noted that Igbinedion University was established at a period when Private Universities did not exist in Nigeria, describing the Institution as a pathfinder for a sector that now comprises 160 private universities across the country.

Ezemonye also acknowledged the contributions of the University's leadership and community to its growth, recognising Deputy Chancellor and former Edo State Governor Chief Lucky Igbinedion, Governing Council Chairman Professor Ahmed Tijani Mora, council members, management, staff, alumni, and students for their respective roles in shaping the Institution.
