The Lagos State Government has urged students and young people to embrace creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship as pathways to self reliance and economic empowerment. The call was made during the 2026 World Creativity and Innovation Day celebration organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) at its Skills Acquisition Centre in Isheri.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Cecilia Dada, encouraged students undergoing training at the ministry's 19 Skills Acquisition Centres to harness their talents, think creatively and develop innovative ideas that can create employment opportunities and improve livelihoods. She noted that creativity and innovation are critical tools for personal development and sustainable economic growth, stressing that innovation extends beyond technology to include vocational and technical skills such as fashion design, catering, hairdressing, shoemaking, bead making and arts and crafts.
According to the commissioner, the state government remains committed to equipping residents, particularly women and young people, with practical skills that promote financial independence and entrepreneurship.
The event featured a motivational session by entrepreneurship advocate Gbenga Ademujimi, who urged participants to identify opportunities within their communities, make productive use of social media and continuously improve their skills. He encouraged students to build networks, create value and remain focused on personal growth as they prepare for the future of work.
A highlight of the celebration was an exhibition of products and creative works produced by trainees from the ministry's skills centres. The displays included fashion designs, hairstyles, beadworks, crafts, catering products and other vocational projects.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, commended participants and stakeholders for supporting the programme, describing creativity and skills acquisition as essential components of youth development and poverty reduction.
The Lagos State Government stated it would continue to invest in skills development initiatives aimed at preparing young people for entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable employment opportunities.
