The Lagos State University of Education has secured 100% accreditation of its programmes from the National Universities Commission, covering 66 courses, as the institution continues to cement its standing as one of Lagos State's fastest growing universities, the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Bilikis Lafiaji Okuneye, has disclosed.

Speaking in an interview, Lafiaji Okuneye attributed the accreditation success to government funding, staff commitment and the cooperative stance of the Governing Council, noting that the process took two years following a resource verification exercise in 2022. She stressed that securing accreditation before the graduation of the first set of students was critical, as failure to do so would have barred them from NYSC mobilisation.

She revealed that the conversion of the institution from a college of education into a full university triggered a dramatic enrolment surge, with student numbers climbing from between 1,000 and 1,200 to over 16,000, eliminating the need for active recruitment drives that once saw staff travelling to Ogun and Ondo states to canvass for admissions.

On accommodation, the vice chancellor said a female hostel is currently under construction at the Ijanikin campus, with a public private partnership arrangement being pursued to expand on campus housing. A 750 capacity lecture theatre at the Epe campus is also nearing completion.

Lafiaji Okuneye identified entrepreneurship as a core selling point of the institution, noting that every student graduates with both a degree certificate and a compulsory entrepreneurship certificate, while students are also encouraged to register businesses with the Corporate Affairs Commission before graduation.

On the Federal Government's proposal to exempt college of education students from writing JAMB, she expressed strong support, arguing that the current system channels weaker candidates into teacher training institutions.

"It is ridiculous and laughable that they will now put the cut off at 80 or 90 over 400. It is shameful that we admit somebody who scored 80 over 400 to a higher institution," she stated.

She also highlighted LASUED's Hospitality and Tourism programme, describing it as the only such programme currently running in any university in the Southwest.
