Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has approved the release of N1.1 billion to clear outstanding salary arrears owed to workers of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, in a move aimed at ending an indefinite strike that has disrupted academic activities at the Institution.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (AAUA chapter) declared industrial action over the non payment of lecturers' salaries for May and June 2026, commencing a total withdrawal of services at 11:59pm on Friday, July 10, after its congress resolved not to resume work until the outstanding salaries were fully settled.

Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, disclosed the approval, stating that the intervention underscores the administration's commitment to education and workers' welfare. He explained that the fund is specifically designated to offset the arrears and bring the strike to an end, adding that Aiyedatiwa had directed the Ministry of Finance and University management to ensure prompt release and disbursement.

"We appeal to the unions to suspend the strike and return to work in the interest of our students and the development of the Institution," the governor stated.

The strike forced the postponement of second semester examinations that were earlier scheduled to begin on July 20, disrupting academic activities across the University. The AAUA Students' Union subsequently issued a 72 hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government, demanding immediate resolution and warning that a failure to demonstrate genuine commitment within that period could trigger peaceful protests.

University management had earlier appealed to students to remain calm, assuring them that the State Government was already processing a special intervention fund to address the salary backlog.
