Lead City University in Ibadan has become the first private Institution in Nigeria to receive full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for a dentistry programme, following a comprehensive assessment of its teaching facilities, laboratories, clinical training infrastructure and academic capacity.
The accreditation, granted to the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Surgery within the University's College of Medicine, authorises the institution to admit 15 students annually into its Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme. The quota was approved after MDCN officials confirmed that the University possesses the facilities and academic resources necessary to train that number of students to the standard required for dental practice in Nigeria.
The development adds to the University's existing capacity of 75 annual admissions into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery programme, further consolidating its position within Nigeria's private medical education sector.
The MDCN assessment, which precedes any such accreditation, typically evaluates teaching hospitals, dental clinics, laboratories, staffing levels and curriculum compliance before approval is granted. Officials familiar with the process confirmed that the council was satisfied that Lead City University's dentistry programme met all professional, academic and clinical requirements.
Education analyst Dr Emmanuel Taiwo described the accreditation as a meaningful step in expanding access to dental education through Nigeria's private university sector, noting that the country faces a growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals.
With the accreditation now in place, prospective students can enrol in the BDS programme under the full regulatory oversight of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, with the assurance that their qualification will meet the standards required for professional practice.
For a private University still building its profile in health sciences education, becoming the first of its kind to clear this particular regulatory bar carries significance that extends well beyond its own campus.
