The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted full accreditation to the College of Health Sciences of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, clearing the institution to continue running its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery programme with an approved admission quota of 100 students.
The MDCN team, led by Deputy Registrar Dr Nnameka Nwakanma, issued the seal of approval during an accreditation visit to the institution on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Nwakanma expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by the university and emphasised the importance of aligning the college's operations with the council's regulatory standards.
The accreditation also means the College of Medicine will be recognised and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, a development stakeholders described as a landmark achievement for healthcare education in Ondo State and beyond.
Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji noted that the university management had worked diligently to put in place the necessary structures and facilities required for the exercise.
"The university remains fully committed to excellence in medical education and is determined to ensure that all standards stipulated by the council are met and implemented to strengthen the College of Health Sciences," Oladiji stated.
The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, for mobilising community leaders to support the medical programme through donations of ultra modern teaching laboratories and accommodation facilities for medical students.
Chief Medical Director of FUTA Teaching Hospital Professor Olusegun Ojo described the outcome as a moment of great significance for the institution.
"It is a wonderful development that students have the hope to move forward. It is a great achievement for the vice chancellor and the university. We thank God for everything," Ojo revealed.
The MDCN accreditation follows an earlier approval granted by the National Universities Commission for the Medicine and Surgery programme in a letter dated April 7, 2026.
