A landmark intervention in Nigeria’s public education sector has reached a critical milestone following the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Obele Community Senior and Junior Secondary Schools in Surulere.

Spearheaded by the Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF) in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, and supported by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO), the project marks a decisive strike against infrastructure deficits.

The urgent revitalization of the Obele complex addresses years of systemic decay, overcrowding, and dilapidated facilities. Operating under VCDF’s Model School Initiative (MSI), this project serves as a strategic blueprint for collaborative, impact driven solutions in the education sector.

At the official handover ceremony, Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli Balogun, asserted that optimized learning environments are the primary catalysts for student performance and long term well being.

Commending the synergy between VCDF and its partners, Alli Balogun emphasized that safe and inclusive spaces are essential to the state’s development goals. Permanent Secretary Abisola Dokunmu Adegbite also urged administrators to safeguard the new facilities through rigorous maintenance.

The scale of the rehabilitation is extensive, delivering a total modernization of the Obele Senior High School campus. The project renovated 14 classrooms and 13 offices, alongside the construction of three state of the art science laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Infrastructure upgrades included a total roof replacement for a major one storey block and the installation of new sanitation facilities. The foundation also provided 150 laboratory stools, 100 student desks, and new instructional boards.

Parallel upgrades at Obele Junior School included the renovation of eight classrooms and 10 offices. The school library was also overhauled, now outfitted with study cubicles, modern shelving, and new seating.

To ensure a conducive atmosphere, the foundation installed new ceiling fans, teachers’ furniture, and a robust water system. James Olabi Odey, VCDF’s National Programme Manager, noted that the MSI model has already reached over 28,000 beneficiaries across Lagos, Delta, and Akwa Ibom.

Odey highlighted that SEEPCO’s involvement demonstrates how corporate social responsibility can effectively align with community priorities. This initiative directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, focusing on equitable and inclusive education.

Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf, Chairman of Surulere Local Government, joined dignitaries including Olusegun Osinaike and Florence Bolodeoku in stressing that the success of this investment now rests on community ownership and accountability.

For the residents of Obele, this transformation represents a total departure from decades of neglect. Community leaders described the project as a major shift that will enhance both teaching outcomes and the broader socio economic development of the area.
