Nigerian students have threatened nationwide protests and a shutdown of socio economic and academic activities unless the Federal Government and Plateau State Government secure the release of abducted University of Jos student John Arum within 48 hours.
The National Association of Nigerian Students issued the ultimatum on Tuesday through a statement signed by its National President, Olushola Oladoja, condemning the kidnapping and describing it as evidence of a deteriorating security situation across the country.
Arum was abducted while travelling from Jos to Kaduna. His captors released a video showing him being brutalised, and have demanded a ransom of ₦30 million for his release.
Oladoja described the incident as symptomatic of a wider problem. "The horrifying incident that has happened to John is yet another reminder of the steady and unacceptable decline in the safety and security of Nigerian citizens, especially students," the statement noted.
NANS expressed particular frustration at the response of authorities. "However, what is more perplexing is the apathy and weak response of our security institutions and local authorities at the state and federal levels," the statement stated. It further warned that "silence, delay, or half measures in moments when decisive action is required only embolden perpetrators and deepen public despair."
The association was unequivocal about its demands. "By this statement, NANS is giving the Plateau State government and the Federal Government 48 hours to immediately deploy intelligence and security resources to secure Arum's safe release, as well as regular updates to the public on efforts being made," the statement read.
Oladoja reinforced the association's position personally. "Under my leadership, NANS will not remain silent or stand idly while our colleagues are hunted, abducted, and brutalised. It is unacceptable and must not continue. The time for decisive action is now," he affirmed.
NANS warned that failure to meet its demands within the stipulated timeframe would compel Nigerian students to embark on a nationwide solidarity protest and total shutdown of socio economic and academic activities across the country.
