The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the selection of a new Student Union Government executive at Federal University Kashere in Gombe State, describing the process as undemocratic and demanding its immediate cancellation within seven days.
The rejection followed a memorandum in which outgoing Student Union Government President Faizu Danyaya listed a 26 member leadership to succeed his team. Danyaya said elections were not conducted due to security concerns, adding that the new leadership emerged through selection interviews witnessed by university management representatives.
NANS national leadership dismissed the process outright, issuing a seven day ultimatum to the Federal University Kashere management to cancel the announced executives and commence arrangements for a credible election.
"NANS unequivocally condemns and rejects the purported selection of the Student Union Government executives of the Federal University Kashere, Gombe State, as conveyed in the memorandum dated 26th June 2026. NANS views this action as a gross violation of the principles of democratic governance, students' participation, and the long established tradition of independent student unionism in Nigeria," the association stated.
NANS argued that no university management, committee or administrative body held the moral authority to substitute the collective will of students with an imposed leadership, warning that allowing the development to stand would set a dangerous precedent across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The association demanded the withdrawal of every administrative action connected with the selection process and called for the constitution of an independent electoral process guaranteeing equal participation for all eligible students in line with the Students Union Constitution.
It further demanded a written assurance from university management that future student union elections would remain free from interference, manipulation or imposition.
NANS warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would compel the national secretariat to activate lawful and constitutional measures, including peaceful demonstrations and formal petitions to government agencies and education stakeholders.
The association reaffirmed that student unionism remained a foundation for leadership development and democratic values, stressing that institutions of higher learning had a responsibility to uphold rather than undermine those principles.
