The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has pushed back against circulating media reports linking the University of Abuja to the alleged diversion of student loan disbursements, asserting that the claims lack a verified foundation.
A statement from the Fund's Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, made clear that NELFUND has not received documented evidence confirming that the University of Abuja diverted, withheld or misapplied any funds disbursed under the student loan programme.
The agency described its disbursement process as operating within a structured reconciliation framework anchored in its statutory mandate, with funds channelled through established institutional pathways and compliance mechanisms embedded throughout to guarantee accountability. NELFUND added that where discrepancies surface regarding student account credits or institutional reconciliation, it engages the relevant institution directly to reach an administrative resolution through due process.
Distancing itself from the media reports, the Fund maintained that published allegations carry no weight as established findings, and that only verified documentation, formal audits and reconciliation procedures inform its response to any disbursement concerns.
The agency restated its dedication to protecting the interests of Nigerian students enrolled in the loan scheme and confirmed its intention to sustain collaborative relationships with partner institutions across the country.
Its statement read that "NELFUND wishes to state clearly that, as of this moment, there is no verified evidence before the Fund establishing that the University of Abuja has diverted, misappropriated, or unlawfully withheld NELFUND disbursements. NELFUND operates a structured disbursement and reconciliation framework in line with its statutory mandate. Funds are released through established institutional channels, and compliance mechanisms are in place to ensure accountability and transparency."
