Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike has launched a new Institute dedicated to preparing students for careers in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital business, entrepreneurship and agritech, responding to a growing demand for technically skilled graduates that Nigeria's expanding digital economy is currently unable to meet from existing University programmes.

The Institute for Future Skills and Innovation (IFSI) was announced by the university and developed in partnership with the African Skills and Innovation Network. Its Executive Director, Professor Chinedu Ekuma, said the institute is designed to go beyond conventional academic instruction by integrating applied research and professional training through a digital first learning model supported by an advanced Learning Management System and collaboration with faculty and industry experts from across Nigeria and internationally.

Vice Chancellor Professor Daniel Nwachukwu framed the launch as a direct response to a labour market that is changing faster than most universities are currently equipped to address. "The world of work is changing at an unprecedented pace, and universities must evolve to prepare graduates for new industries driven by digital technologies and innovation," he said. "The Institute for Future Skills and Innovation positions AE FUNAI to equip students with the skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset required to lead in the digital economy."

He added that the University's broader ambition extends beyond Nigeria. "We want AE FUNAI graduates to be innovators, technology leaders, and entrepreneurs capable of shaping the future, not just in Nigeria, but globally."

The timing of the launch reflects a gap that has become increasingly difficult to ignore. Nigeria's fintech, AI and digital services sectors have expanded rapidly in recent years, but industry employers consistently report that the supply of graduates with the interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial skills these sectors require falls significantly short of demand.

For students currently enrolled at AE FUNAI or considering where to pursue degrees in technology and business, the new institute offers a structured route into some of the most in demand professional fields in the country, from a university that is visibly investing in making that preparation credible.
