The Nigeria Niger Joint Commission has received an officially approved list of accredited private Universities and higher institutions in the Niger Republic, in a development that is expected to affect how Nigerian agencies recognise qualifications obtained from the neighbouring country.
The list was approved by Niger's Minister of Education and Scientific Research, Mamadou Saidou, who transmitted it to the Commission's Secretary General, Musa S. Mamman, during a formal meeting. The Minister stated that the document represents the only authentic and officially recognised record of accredited higher Institutions in Niger, adding that any list outside the verified submission should be treated with caution.
The compilation was undertaken and validated by Niger's National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education and Research, the country's sole regulatory authority for accreditation, evaluation, and quality assurance in the higher education sector. The agency's exclusive accrediting authority is further backed by the Declaration of Addis Ababa, which recognises it as the only body empowered to validate academic certificates within and outside the Niger Republic.
The Commission has since written to Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, requesting that the verified list be circulated to the National Universities Commission, the National Youth Service Corps, and other relevant regulatory bodies for official records and guidance.
The move is significant for Nigerian students and graduates who obtained qualifications from Institutions in the Niger Republic, as the verified list will now serve as the definitive reference point for official recognition processes in Nigeria.
Established in 1971, the Nigeria Niger Joint Commission serves as the bilateral platform for cooperation between both countries across security, trade, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and education.
