A Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, 23, has passed away after sustaining critical injuries in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was due to graduate.

The graduate was struck on June 29, 2026, when Russian forces allegedly bombed the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. She received initial treatment in Kharkiv before being moved to Germany, where she died on Sunday, July 5, despite efforts by medical teams to save her.

Kharkiv National Medical University confirmed her death and paid tribute to her, describing her as an outstanding student known for her compassion. "Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere, and kind hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work, and sincere desire to help others," the University disclosed.

The institution revealed that medical professionals in both Ukraine and Germany worked to save her, but her injuries ultimately proved fatal. "Everyone sympathized, helped, and hoped for her recovery, but they could not save her life," the University added.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office also conveyed condolences to her family, noting that doctors fought for her life until the very end.

Adaobi had enrolled at Kharkiv National Medical University in 2020 and had gone on to complete internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Türkiye as part of her medical training.

Reports indicated that Adaobi and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were heading to a graduation photoshoot at the time of the airstrike. Fatima died at the scene, while Adaobi was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

The attack also left 12 other people injured, further adding to civilian casualties recorded amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
