The Faculty of Arts at the University of Lagos has inaugurated a N30 million healthcare facility for students and staff, marking the first faculty based clinic in the institution's history.

The facility, named the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, was commissioned on the UNILAG campus through a collaboration between the faculty, its alumni association and Cityview Hospital Limited.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Akanbi Ilupeju, said the initiative was designed to address recurring health challenges among students, particularly during examination periods. He stated that "this project is a major step towards addressing health challenges faced by students, particularly during examination periods, while also ensuring accessible medical care for academic and non academic staff."

Ilupeju added that the facility would help reduce disruptions to academic activities caused by health emergencies, positioning the clinic as a direct response to a longstanding welfare gap within the faculty.

National Social Secretary of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Mr Francis Shonubi, described the commissioning as a defining moment for the university community. He declared that "today is a historic moment for all of us as we gather for the official grand opening of the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, the first of its kind in the University of Lagos."

Shonubi noted that the clinic was established to provide timely healthcare services within the academic environment and improve the overall welfare of both students and staff. He confirmed that the facility would operate Monday to Friday as a full clinic, with a doctor and nurse on standby at all times.

The clinic will serve members of both the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Creative Arts and will operate under the supervision of the UNILAG Medical Centre. Healthcare and wellness services will be provided exclusively to members of both faculties.

The Faculty of Arts extended appreciation to the Chief Medical Director of Cityview Hospital, Dr Mutiu Shittu, and his management team for their support in establishing the facility.

The inauguration represents a broader push within Nigerian universities to embed accessible healthcare into the academic environment, reducing the burden on students who often face health emergencies without immediate institutional support.
