A Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, has ordered the remand of a 37 year old nurse for 60 days in connection with the death of a 23 year old corps member, as the case surrounding the death of Victoria Ariyo continues to draw in new defendants.
Kehinde Adesanya was arraigned on Thursday on a four count charge covering conspiracy, procurement of unlawful abortion and murder. Prosecuting counsel Solomon Babalola told the court that drugs supplied by the defendant for the purpose of terminating a pregnancy resulted in Ariyo's death. The alleged offences were said to have been committed between January and March 2026 at the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
The charge sheet stated that Adesanya and others still at large conspired to procure an abortion, an offence under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State 2006. She was also accused of unlawfully supplying drugs to induce the abortion under Section 230 of the same law, and of conspiring to commit murder and unlawfully causing Ariyo's death through the administration of abortion drugs, under Sections 324 and 319 of the Criminal Code.
Presiding Magistrate O.O. Sam Obaleye ordered Adesanya remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions. The case was adjourned to 26 May 2026.
Police investigations have also linked the pregnancy to an alleged relationship between Ariyo and Abass Olalekan, an NYSC Local Government Inspector in Abeokuta South. Olalekan was separately arraigned before another Magistrate Court on charges of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of ₦500,000.
The deaths of two corps members in Abeokuta within a short period have intensified national scrutiny over the welfare and safety of graduates serving under the NYSC scheme.
