The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on staff and corps members to recommit to the ideals of unity, service, and national cohesion as the scheme marks its 53rd anniversary on Friday, 22nd May 2026.

In his anniversary message addressed to staff and corps members, the Director General described the occasion as a moment to reflect on the scheme's legacy while pressing forward with renewed determination to consolidate the achievements of those who built the NYSC into what it is today.

Brigadier General Nafiu acknowledged the contributions of staff, describing their efforts as the backbone of the scheme's operations.

"Day after day, year after year, you ensure the smooth running of our operations, provide guidance, nurture growth, and maintain the high standards that define the NYSC. Your resilience and excellence keep the vision alive and thriving," he stated.

As part of activities marking the anniversary, the NYSC management announced the institution of a Long Service Award to recognise staff members who have served the scheme for up to 30 years. Qualified beneficiaries are to receive certificates during the anniversary celebration, a gesture the Director General said reflects the management's appreciation for loyalty and long term contributions to the growth of the scheme.

Turning to corps members, he described them as the lifeblood of the scheme, noting that each batch brings fresh energy and ideas that deepen the NYSC's impact across the country.

The Director General also reaffirmed the scheme's core mandate, urging all stakeholders to remain steadfast in strengthening national cohesion and cultural integration.

"Let us recommit to our mandate of strengthening national cohesion and cultural integration. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping Nigeria one," he noted.

He expressed optimism that the actions taken during the 53rd chapter of the scheme's history would inspire future generations, just as the current generation had drawn inspiration from those who served before them.
