The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on corps employers across the country to create enabling environments that allow corps members to channel their skills towards meaningful societal solutions.
General Nafiu delivered the charge at the launch of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Innovation Space, tagged "idea2impact", held at the NITDA headquarters in Abuja.
Describing corps members as solution providers, he challenged ministries, departments and agencies, private entities and other establishments to tap into their capabilities.
"The youths we have at the NYSC are solution providers and I want to challenge, ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), private entities and other establishments to tap into their wealth of experiences and skills to create solutions for the larger society," he noted.
General Nafiu commended NITDA for the opportunity extended to corps members and described the "idea2impact" project as a viable platform for young Nigerians to demonstrate creativity. He also disclosed that the scheme had digitised corps members identity cards alongside other technological innovations since he assumed office.
"This initiative is a viable one and it is a way of opening doors of opportunities to these young Nigerians," he added.
NITDA Director General, Mr Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, who served as a corps member 22 years ago as a Computer Science graduate, urged members to build visibility through their skills, stressing that hard work alone is insufficient without personal strategy and assertiveness.
"You need to promote yourself, hard work doesn't always get you to where you want to be. You need to be assertive to get what you want," Inuwa stated.
He revealed that corps members serving with NITDA had contributed directly to the agency's operations, with one member developing a solution that supported its artificial intelligence transformation plan. He added that corps members who perform meritoriously during their service year would be retained by the agency.
