A late night rainstorm that caused structural damage at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Paiko, Niger State, prompted the scheme's Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, to cut short his visit to Benue State and travel directly to the affected camp to assess the situation and initiate repairs.
General Nafiu, who was in Makurdi when news of the damage reached him, immediately convened his team and proceeded to Paiko to personally inspect the affected structures. He assured the 2026 Batch A, Stream II corps members undergoing their orientation exercise at the camp that their welfare, safety, and security remained the scheme's top priority and would not be compromised.
The camp hosts 2,484 corps members, comprising 1,241 male and 1,243 female, including Federal Capital Territory corps members relocated to Niger State for their orientation exercise. The NYSC Niger State Coordinator, Mrs Martina Shuaibu Ibrahim, provided the figures during the Director General's visit.
General Nafiu acknowledged that while luxury was not expected at orientation camps, minimum standards were non negotiable. He confirmed that discussions were ongoing between the NYSC and the Niger State Government to repair the damage and upgrade the facility, adding that corps members would not be left stranded.
He commended the corps members for their restraint, noting that no photographs or social media posts of the damaged structures had emerged from the camp.
The Director General used the visit to reinforce the purpose of the scheme, describing it as a platform deliberately designed to foster national unity across Nigeria's diverse communities. He urged corps members to build lasting friendships beyond the camp and service year.
On the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, General Nafiu described it as a critical tool for economic independence, stressing that the skills acquired during the service year could generate employment or provide supplementary income after service.
He also disclosed that the 2026 Batch A, Stream II corps members would be the first cohort to serve as adhoc staff during the 2027 general elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission set to provide the necessary training. He warned firmly against partisanship, thuggery, and electoral misconduct, reiterating that the NYSC remains a non partisan institution.
