The National Youth Service Corps in Zamfara State has acknowledged improved welfare and operational conditions for corps members, attributing recent progress to the support of Governor Dauda Lawal.

The State Coordinator, Muhammad Lawan, made this known during a meeting with the Zamfara Council leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Gusau on Tuesday, where he highlighted gains in security and programme delivery.

Lawan noted that the state government’s intervention had strengthened NYSC activities and enhanced the wellbeing of corps members deployed across the state. “I appreciate the Zamfara Government under Gov. Lawal for the improved security provided for NYSC activities, as well as the enhanced welfare support,” he stated.

He also recognised the establishment of the state NYSC Governing Board in line with the provisions of the NYSC Act, describing it as a step that has reinforced the administration of the scheme in Zamfara.

According to him, corps members continue to play vital roles in education, healthcare and community development, especially in underserved areas. He explained that many public institutions rely on their contributions to function effectively. “Most schools and hospitals in the state will not operate optimally without corps members,” he disclosed.

He further pointed to visible community development projects executed by corps members, including toilet facilities, boreholes, mini libraries and skill acquisition initiatives, which have directly benefited host communities. “If you move around the communities, you will find projects such as toilet facilities, borehole projects, mini libraries, and skill acquisition projects initiated by our corps members for the benefit of their host communities”, the coordinator added.

Lawan appealed to the state government to establish a permanent orientation camp, explaining that such a facility would provide improved space, security and infrastructure for corps members. He noted that it would also strengthen the implementation of the mandatory three week orientation course and support skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes for youths.

“The permanent orientation camp will also serve as a centre for skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development activities for corps members and other youths in the state,” he said.

He reiterated the scheme’s long standing role in promoting national unity and integration, while commending the media for sustained support and partnership in publicising NYSC activities across Zamfara.
