The National Youth Service Corps has formally requested reinforced security coverage for corps members and scheme officials nationwide, with particular attention to the protection of corps lodges as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, Director General of the NYSC, requested a courtesy visit to the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The visit was aimed at renewing the existing collaboration between both agencies and strengthening operational ties for improved corps member safety.
Nafiu congratulated Disu on his appointment and commended him on the recent inauguration of his crack team, noting that the Nigeria Police Force has been instrumental to the success of NYSC activities and programmes since the scheme's inception.
The Director General specifically appealed for maximum security coverage for corps members and NYSC officials within and outside orientation camps, as well as protection of corps members and their properties, including corps lodges, in the period leading to the 2027 general elections.
Nafiu also raised the matter of exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy, citing the NYSC Act, which stipulates that members of the armed forces and paramilitary agencies are exempted from national service. He expressed his intention to interface with the management of the Police Academy to enable the NYSC to issue the statutory certificates of exemption to its graduates.
Disu, in his response, assured the Director General of continued police support for the scheme, confirming that the addresses of all corps lodges were already available with the force to allow appropriate action whenever the need arose. The Inspector General described the exemption certificate matter as a welcome development and pledged greater cooperation between the Police and the NYSC going forward.
