The National Youth Service Corps has outlined plans to strengthen its orientation programme ahead of the 2026 Batch B Stream I exercise, with a focus on equipping participants with practical skills and national values.

Speaking in Abuja during the 2026 Batch B Pre Orientation Course Workshop, the Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, highlighted the growing importance of the orientation exercise as participation continues to rise. He noted that the increasing number of Prospective Corps Members places greater responsibility on stakeholders, especially state governments, to provide functional and suitable camp facilities.

According to him, “Effectively managing this growing number of Corps Members presents not only logistical challenges but also an opportunity to expand our developmental impact as a Scheme. By aligning orientation content with national priorities, we can ensure that a larger intake yields better results.”

Nafiu described the orientation course as a key platform for shaping responsible citizens and urged officials to uphold high standards in camp administration. He stated that personnel must act as examples for corps members by demonstrating discipline and integrity at all times.

“Demonstrate good conduct so that Corps Members can look up to you. Guide and inspire them, and make it clear that unethical behaviour by camp officials and Corps Members will not be tolerated,” he stated.

He also called for improved use of digital platforms in training, stressing that corps members should be guided on responsible online behaviour and how to mobilise communities effectively. “Our orientation programmes should leverage digital media tools constructively and train Corps Members in responsible digital conduct and effective community mobilisation,” he said.

Security was also identified as a priority, with the Director General urging sustained collaboration with security agencies. “We must promote security awareness and maintain close cooperation with our security partners to keep our camps safe,” he stated.

Earlier, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr Nura Umar, disclosed that the workshop was organised to review past orientation exercises and address identified gaps. He added that the theme, “ Strengthening the Orientation Course to Advance National Priorities and Contemporary Challenges,” reflects the scheme’s commitment to improving service delivery.

Umar noted that the orientation course plays a vital role in promoting discipline, patriotism, and national values, urging participants to contribute practical ideas for better camp management.
