Obafemi Awolowo University has appointed one of its own alumni, Adejare Bello, a former speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, as the new Pro Chancellor and chairman of the governing council of the institution.
The appointment, announced on Friday by the University's public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, fills the vacancy created by the death of Siyan Oyeweso, the immediate past Pro Chancellor, who passed away in December 2025 at the age of 64.
Bello, who earned his law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, brings a combination of legislative experience, diplomatic credentials, and a longstanding connection to the institution that uniquely positions him to lead the governing council.
He served as speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly for two terms, from 2003 to 2011, during the administration of former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola. During his tenure, he was known for exemplary leadership, integrity, and dedication to democratic governance.
Beyond his legislative career, Bello also served Nigeria as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico in June 2021, with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama, where he contributed significantly to the country's diplomatic engagements and international relations.
Olarewaju described Bello, an indigene of Ede in Osun State, as a respected figure known for his humility, accessibility, and exceptional human relations.
"The University expresses profound confidence in his capacity to provide visionary leadership and to work harmoniously with council members, management, staff, unions, students, alumni, and other stakeholders in advancing the mission and global standing of the university," the statement said.
"The entire university community congratulates Rt. Hon. Adejare Bello on this well deserved appointment and looks forward to a new era of stability, progress, and excellence under his chairmanship," Olarewaju added.
