Academic activities at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, resumed on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, following the expiration of a three week mid semester break that was declared after students protested against a newly introduced transportation system on campus.
The resumption was sanctioned by the university senate during a special meeting held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, and communicated through an internal memorandum issued by the Principal Assistant Registrar of the Senate Division, I. B. Aronkola, addressed to all Deans of Faculties.
The memo confirmed that the Senate reviewed the circumstances that led to the suspension of academic activities and resolved that students should return on May 19.
"Senate agreed that students should resume on Tuesday, 19th May, 2026, and all academic activities would commence immediately," the memorandum stated.
The Senate also noted that the transportation concerns that triggered the student demonstration had been resolved through engagements with relevant stakeholders.
"Senate recalled that the three week moratorium was introduced to give the administration ample time to look into the situation generated by the newly introduced transportation system. It also noted the information that all matters that emanated from the situation had been sufficiently addressed," the memo added.
The mid semester break was first announced on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, by the university spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, who described the decision as necessary following sustained protests by students over transportation inconvenience linked to the new policy.
All faculty deans were directed to take note of the senate resolution and implement the necessary steps to ensure a full return to academic activities.
