Paul University, Awka, has indefinitely suspended a lecturer following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student, with the institution inviting law enforcement authorities to take over the matter amid tension on campus.

The suspended staff member, Mr Chukwuemeka Eze, a practical biology technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, was removed from duty pending the outcome of an internal disciplinary process and a separate investigation by security agencies.

The university's Public Relations Officer, Nnaemeka Onukwufor, said in a statement that management acted swiftly after the allegation was formally brought to its attention and after the incident triggered tension among students and raised concerns about possible unrest.

The university clarified that the suspension did not amount to a declaration of guilt but was necessary to protect the integrity of the investigation and preserve order within the institution.

"Sexual harassment and every form of sexual misconduct remain unacceptable regardless of the status of those involved," the institution stated, describing itself as a faith based institution founded on principles of discipline, integrity, and respect for human dignity.

Management acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident on the university community, particularly the affected student, and announced plans to provide counselling and psychological support for those directly or indirectly affected. The institution assured parents, students, and the public that every necessary step would be taken to guarantee justice while maintaining a safe learning environment.

The development followed the circulation of a video on social media earlier in the week showing a man alleged to be a university lecturer fleeing through a window after students reportedly interrupted an alleged sexual encounter with a female student inside an office. The incident was initially linked to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, which denied any connection and confirmed the individual was not a member of its staff. Paul University subsequently identified the man as Eze and confirmed his employment at the institution. Beyond his academic role, Eze also serves as an Anglican priest in Anambra State.

The university said investigations remain ongoing and pledged to handle the matter transparently while ensuring fairness to all parties involved.
