Peter University, Achina Onneh, has received official approval from the National Universities Commission to introduce six new undergraduate degree programmes, with implementation set to begin from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The six newly accredited programmes span the computing, medical sciences, and social sciences fields, and include Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Social Work, Public Administration, and Psychology.
According to the institution, the programmes have undergone standard evaluation and carry full NUC backing, ensuring that their curricula meet national regulatory standards for tertiary education in Nigeria.
Following the clearance, applications for admission into the six courses have commenced immediately for the 2026/2027 academic session, with the registration portal now open for interested candidates.
Peter University is a private institution owned by the Catholic Diocese of Awka and Ekwulobia. The university received its operating licence from the Federal Government in May 2022, when the National Universities Commission approved a batch of 12 new private universities nationwide.
The institution, led by Vice Chancellor Rev Fr Prof Emmanuel Chukwuemenam Umezinwa, has continued to expand its academic offerings since it began operations, with the National Universities Commission conducting periodic assessment visits to the campus as part of its accreditation processes for existing and newly proposed programmes.
The addition of Data Science and other computing focused courses aligns with a broader push across Nigerian Universities to expand offerings in technology and digital skills, an area regulators and institutions have increasingly prioritised amid rising demand for graduates in artificial intelligence, analytics, and related fields.
